FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, 8vo, xvii, [i], 298, 32 (ads). Original blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt, bevelled boards bordered with blind rolls, front board blocked in gilt. A little spotting. Head of spine panel defective, extremities rubbed. Flyleaf inscribed ‘John S. Mackie, Jan. 1877 / From the author’ (the two lines probably in different hands), and below ‘Dec. 28 ’96 / Wil. Blaikie’.

Notes

The first edition of the this epic poem by book collector and art historian Alexander William Crawford Lindsay (1812-1880), the last work he published before his death. Lindsay is best known for assembling the Bibliotheca Lindesiana, which, at its height, comprised numerous documents and ephemera, six thousand manuscript codices, scrolls and fragments, and 100,000 books.
