FIRST EDITION, 8vo, pp. x, 576, 16 (ads) + frontispiece. Original textured brick-red cloth by Edmonds & Remnants (with their ticket), boards blocked with a geometric frame in blind, spine lettered in gilt. Extremities a little rubbed, a touch of wear to head of spine.

Notes

Alexander Carlyle (1722-1805) was Moderator of the Church of Scotland in 1770 and a witness to the 1745 battle of Prestonpans. Although first published in 1860 this autobiography was written nearly a century earlier, covering events to the year 1770. It proved popular, reprinting within the year and reaching a third edition in 1861. Scarce in the original cloth.
