Contemporary calf by Carss & Co. of Glasgow, boards bordered with triple blind rules, spine divided by raised bands between triple gilt rules, red morocco label, edges sprinkled red. A few small marks, spine a little sunned. Bookplate of Robert McCowan, Glasgow, to pastedown.


Alexander Carlyle (1722-1805) was Moderator of the Church of Scotland in 1770 and a witness to the 1745 battle of Prestonpans. Although first published in 1860 it was written nearly a century earlier, covering events to the year 1770. It proved popular, reprinting within the year and reaching a third edition in 1861.
