Description

Single sheet, 175 x 135 mm, approximately 60 words written in blue ink on Christ Church, Oxford headed paper. Sometime touched by damp and the ink slightly blotchy as a result, paper toned, central crease from folding.

Notes

A polite note from Auden to a Mr Hamilton, concerning an invitation to give a reading. The recipient is almost certainly the literary critic Ian Hamilton (1938-2001), who became president of the Oxford University Poetry Society soon after going up to Keble in 1958, and who is known to have organised a reading by Auden in late 1960.
