Description

12mo, pp. lxxviii, 454, [2] + frontispiece. Twentieth-century half calf, marbled boards, spine divided by double blind rules and lettered in gilt direct. Some scattered foxing and browning.

Notes

The first anthology edited by poet and ballad collector William Motherwell (1797-1835). This edition is a reissue of the Turnbull's 1820 edition with a cancel title-page adding 'Beauties of The Scottish Poets' in a presumed attempt to widen its appeal. The sheets may in fact be left over from the 1819 Paisley first, since the Turnbull editions have a Paisley printer in the colophon and all three editions use the same plate for the frontispiece.
