Description

2 vols., 12mo, pp. [vi], 390; [viii], 398. Contemporary calf, spines divided by raised bands between gilt rules, brown morocco labels, third compartments numbered direct in gilt. Just a touch of spotting. Joints cracked but holding, bindings otherwise a little scratched and rubbed. Armorial bookplates of John Bowden to pastedowns, his ownership inscriptions to title-pages.

Notes

The first Dublin printing of any of Jonson's works, a selection of his most well-known plays, published by the prominent Dublin stationer Samuel Powell. Included are Volpone, Catiline, Bartholomew Fair, Sejanus His Fall, Epicœne, Every Man in his Humour, Every Man Out of His Humour and The Alchemist. It was published by subscription and a subscriber's list included in the second volume, but this example, like some other recorded copies, omits it - presumably having been sold on the retail market instead.
