8vo, pp. [ii], ii, [3]-4, 9-34, [3]-551, [1], l + frontispiece. Text continuous despite pagination. Contemporary sheep, spine divided by double gilt rules, red morocco label, edges sprinkled blue. Some scattered toning and spotting. Rubbed, somewhat worn, small sections of leather peeling from boards, hinges starting. Ownership inscription of James J. Robertson to flyleaf, dated Dec 1953.

Notes

A scarce Leith printing of John Howie's 1775 collection of Presbyterian biographies. Library Hub records just 2 copies, at BL and Newcastle. There are also two recorded copies with a variant imprint, also printed by Allardice in 1816 but with J. Ogle's name substituted for Thomas Nelson and the location changed to Edinburgh.
