FIRST EDITION, 8vo, pp. x, 520 + frontispiece, 59 photographic plates, 4 double-sided plates of music, 1 folding table and 1 folding map. Original grey cloth, front board blocked in gilt, spine lettered and blocked in gilt. A little shaken, stitching strained in places, one plate partly sprung. Boards somewhat damp-marked (particularly the rear), extremities a little bumped. Gift inscription to flyleaf: ‘To Mama and Papa with love from Andrew, on leaving a second time for Burma’ dated 24th October 1907.

Notes

The first edition of Scotland-born colonial administrator Sir James George Scott's compendious guide to Burma, with sections on the flora and fauna, geology, industry, archaeology, art, music, language and literature, with ten pages of 'hints to visitors or new residents'. It reached a third edition by 1921.
