Notes

The first appearance of any of Nabokov's fiction in an American magazine, Cloud, Castle, Lake was first published in Russian in 1937. This translation was made by Nabokov in collaboration with Peter Pertzoff, a fellow Russian émigré who had arrived in the USA in 1920; Nabokov had himself moved to America in 1940 and would publish his first novel written in English, The Real Life of Sebastian Knight, in December 1941.
The magazine also includes an early story by Eudora Welty, entitled Powerhouse.
