Notes

A substantial collection of poetry by Kirkcudbrightshire clergyman William Gillespie (1776-1825). 'He was said to have been of a pleasing appearance, with a musical voice and winning manners, and he was remembered in his parish for his refined taste and his hospitality. But as a poet he lacked any distinction and his publications enjoyed a very limited success' (ODNB).
This copy has been inscribed by 'the Misses Gillespie', possibly relatives of the author - though William himself died childless, he had at least one brother (the dedicatee of the volume) and perhaps sisters or neices, though we have not been able to trace them definitively in the historical record.
