Notes
A translation of Macpherson's Ossian poems into Gaelic, the language they were purportedly translated from, first publiished in 1818. It was translated by Ewen MacLachlan (1773-1822), poet and translator of The Iliad into Gaelic. Following Macpherson's death in 1796, The Highland Society of Scotland set up a commission to determine the authenticity of the Ossian material which reported in 1805. Its conclusion, that Ossian himself was fictional, but Macpherson had drawn on an existing tradition, was woolly enough to allow productions such as this, although by the 1880s this ambiguity had ceased.
This edition is scarce, with Library Hub recording just two holdings, both north of the border: NLS and St Andrews.
