Notes

A substantial transumpt (a formal copy or transcript of a document made for parties to a litigation), totalling around 18,000 words, covering a dispute over ownership of land in Aberdeen, between Magnus Mowat and William Cruickshank, an Aberdeen merchant. The document provides information about the history of ownership of the relevant land, mentioning other parties including the University of Aberdeen, and the Leslie and Bruce families. It was produced on behalf of Alexander Thomson, town clerk of Aberdeen, who signs the foot of each page, and who held that position between 1694 and 1713. The printed informations provided for later Scottish legal cases are generally rare, and surviving manuscript versions like this even scarcer.
