A scarce compilation of epitaphs compiled by Andrew Duncan Senior (1744-1828), a prominent Edinburgh physician, and published for the benefit of a scholarly acquaintance whose income had become 'depressed by accidental misfortunes in the mercantile line' - hence the note below the imprint that 'subscribers will be furnished with their copies by E. Picken, Teacher of Languages, Bristo Street, at 5s [as against 7s at retail] each Copy'.
