Expatriate American Quaker Lindley Murray (1475-1826) settled in York in the 1780s and wrote a series of educational books with immediate success: English Grammar first appeared in 1795 and was regularly reprinted in the following years and well into the nineteenth century, with American editions appearing in 1800.
