Description

FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, 8vo, pp. 168. Original blue cloth, spine lettered in silver, dustjacket printed in blue and black. Dustjacket rubbed to folds and chipped to edges, a little soiled, splitting to foot of one fold. Inscribed to flyleaf: ‘To James Bridie. Here’s tae us! Wha’s like us? From Edward Gaitens.’

Notes

A notable association copy of the scarce first book by Glasgow writer Edward Gaitens (1897-1966), short stories drawing on his own experiences of Gorbals life. It is warmly inscribed to his friend and fellow-writer James Bridie (1888-1951), founder of the Citizens Theatre and at whose urging Gaitens submitted some of the stories collected here for magazine publication. Some of the material was reworked for his 1948 novel 'Dance of The Apprentices' (its title taken from one of these stories), which was dedicated to Bridie, under his real name O.H. Mavor. Library Hub records 7 copies.
