Description

FIRST EDITION, 8vo, pp. vii, [i], 527, [1] + folding map frontispiece. Contemporary black straight-grained morocco, boards bordered with gilt and blind rolls within triple blind rules, spine divided by raised bands gilt, 2nd compartment lettered direct in gilt, other compartments tooled elaborately in gilt, edges gilt. A little spotting and just a touch of toning, small handling tear to edge of folding map, small paper-flaw to title-page not touching text. A little scratched and rubbed, front hinge weakened, flyleaf partially sprung. Modern ownership inscription to flyleaf.

Notes

The first edition of this history, which reached a second edition in 1817 and a third in 1880, in a handsome contemporary binding. The thickness of the large folding map frontispiece prevents the book from closing fully and has over time weakened the front hinge.
