FIRST FRITH EDITION, small 4to, pp. x, [ii], 270, [2] + frontispiece and 24 mounted albumen photographic plates. Original blue cloth, blocked with elaborate gilt and blind designs, edges gilt. Plate mounts foxed, a little offsetting to facing-pages. Rear hinge split exposing webbing, rear joint sometime repaired, some wear to spine-ends. Binders’ ticket of Leighton, Son and Hodge to rear pastedown.

Notes

The first appearance of pioneering photographer and Quaker minister Francis Frith's (1822-1898) photographically-illustrated edition of Longfellow's 1839 novel. Frith contributes a preface to the book, and photographs various 19th-century European beauty spots visited by the novel's protagonist, among them Drachenfels, Innsbruck and the Devil's Bridge in the Swiss Alps.
