Description

FIRST EDITION, 4to, pp. [viii], 166, [6]. Title-page printed in red and black. Contemporary limp vellum, spine lettered in ink. Somewhat toned and spotted. A little soiled, small flaw in vellum to rear wrapper. Ownership signature of A Fletcher [of Saltoun] to rear pastedown.

Notes

A posthumously-published biblical commentary on Paul's epistle to Philemon, by translator and legal writer Scipio Gentili (1563-1616). Although better-known as a professor of law, he also translated psalms and some sections of Torquato Tasso's Gerusalemme Liberata into Latin.
This copy comes from the extraordinary library - the largest and best of its time in Scotland - of the Scottish patriot Andrew Fletcher of Saltoun, with his characteristic inscription to the rear.
