Notes

The first publication of Hoole's popular translation of Tasso's 1581 epic Gerusalemme liberata. Hoole had formed a friendship with Samuel Johnson that served him well: in addition to subscribing to this edition, Johnson wrote the dedication to the Queen. Though Hoole's work was not without its critics (Scott called him 'a noble transmuter of gold into lead'), he was perhaps his era's most prominent translator from the Italian and his Tasso went through nearly a dozen editions before the end of the century.
