The first unexpurgated edition of Lawrence's final novel to be published in the UK. Penguin Books printed 200,000 copies, which sold out on the day of publication, August 16th, 1960. On the same day, Penguin sent 15 copies to authorities, and were subsequently issued a summons. An obscenity trial took place 20th October- 2nd November 1960, ultimately ruling in favour of the publisher, and laying groundwork for a more liberal publishing landscape.
