Nabokov's first publication in the United States and the first of his translations of his own work. The novel was first published in English two years prior, translated by Winifred Roy for John Long in the UK under the title Camera Obscura (echoing the original Russian title Ка́мера обску́ра); it was Nabokov's dissatisfaction with that translation which spurred his own effort, revising and retitling the text in the process. Juliar records three binding variants, of which this green takes precedence.
