2 vols., 12mo, pp. [iv], xlviii, 380, [4]; [iv], 480 + frontispiece, 24 plates and a folding map. Contemporary marbled sheep, spines divided by raised bands, brown morocco labels, other compartments tooled in gilt, edges red, marbled endpapers. A touch of toning to first and last leaves. A little rubbed, joints starting, corners worn. Amorial wax seals of Lindesay family and ownership signatures of P. Lindesay, Musselburgh, to pastedowns, signatures of P. Lindesay also to title-pages beneath earlier struck-through signature, ownership inscriptions of George Paterson dated 1841 to half-titles.

A scarce printing of Fénelon's popular novel, which Worldcat records in just 2 locations, both in Switzerland, in a worn but still attractive contemporary binding. This copy belonged to a P. Lindesay of Musselburgh, most likely Sir Patrick Lindesay (1778-1839), soldier and colonial administrator, the namesake of 2 mountains and one river in Australia.
