A scarce pamphlet recounting significant faults within the Royal Infirmary, including negligent nurses and inadequate food for patients - the institution had been the subject of critique going back nearly two decades for poor management and facilities and evidently had not improved. The author, John Thomson (1765-1846), 'the most learned physician in Scotland' (ODNB), had himself suggested improvements back in 1800 and remained on the committee of surgeons after the resulting reorganisation to drive change from the inside.
