Description

SOLE EDITION, 4to, pp. [ii], iii, [i], ff. 61, pp. [63]-125, [1]. Early plain black cloth, spine lettered in gilt, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Some dustsoiling and spotting to untrimmed edges. Cloth just lightly marked. Inscription and stamps (including a cancel stamp) of the University of Edinburgh and New College Library to pastedown.

Notes

The foliated section is lithographed reproductions of signatures (and one short letter from Marc Isambard Brunel, who was unable to be present) of attendees of the third meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science. Now the British Science Association, the BAAS was founded in opposition to the more elitist and conservative Royal Society, with Charles Babbage, William Whewell, and David Brewster among the initial architects. The first two annual meetings were held in York and Oxford.
