Description

8vo, pp. [vi], 269, [1]. Original yellow cloth, spine lettered in red, yellow dustjacket printed in red, top edge red. Dustjacket somewhat soiled, particularly to spine panel, splitting to front hinge fold and a little chipped to edges.

Notes

The second impression of the second edition of Green's second novel, a modernist work first published in 1929 and acclaimed by Christopher Isherwood as 'the best proletarian novel ever written'. Set in Birmingham and written without conjunctions to better mimic local dialect, 'it derived its most striking effects from an alertness to the patterns of working-class speech, whose idioms it put into circulation in both dialogue and narration' (ODNB).
