Notes

The 1861 reissue of the first three volumes of Mayhew's pioneering 1851 study of London's itinerant, mendicant and indigent population, together with the first edition of the fourth volume, published in a matching binding the following year. As often, this set has some plates not called for by the plate list but lacks some others, with vol. 1 having an additional 'Street Art iv' plate printed to the verso of 'Street Art iii', and 'The Street Stationer' plate not called for in the plate list, but lacks 'The Book Auctioneer', while vol. 3 has the plate 'Street Performers on Stilts' in place of 'Interior of Photographer's Travelling Caravan'.
