An early yellowback reprint of American author Bret Harte's California-set romance. By 1885 Harte was living in London and publishing primarily for the British market. Maruja, like many of his works of the 1880s, was first published by Chatto and Windus in 1885, with an American edition following a few weeks later. It was issued in tan cloth as well as the cheaper yellowback format and we have seen examples of both the 1885 first and this 1887 second printing in both bindings; this copy was bound a little later, with the ads to the rear dated November 1893.
