Notes

The illegitimate son of King James II and VII, the Duke of Berwick spent most of his life fighting foreign wars. He was peripherally involved in the Jacobite rebellion of 1715, but his French commitments prevented him from travelling to Scotland, causing a lasting rift. With French forces he invaded Spain in 1719 and was killed in service in Germany in 1734.
