FIRST EDITION, 4to, pp. xii, 332. Contemporary marbled calf. A little toning and spotting, small repair to edge of title-page. Edges worn, some rubbing and scratching to boards, sometime rebacked with red morocco labels and new endpapers, spine now also a little rubbed. Bookplate of the (dispersed) library of the Dictionary of the Older Scottish Tongue to pastedown, Edinburgh University Library stamp and duplicate notes to title-page, pencil inscription ‘Pres. by Commander Erskine Hannay’ to title-page.

Notes

The scarce first printing of the surviving text of a significant historical memoir by the learned Sir George Mackenzie of Rosehaugh (1636-1691), author of the first textbook of Scots criminal law. Intended to be included in his collected works of 1716-22, the manuscript was withheld by the family and was lost for nearly a century, before being rediscovered as part of a bundle of waste-paper sold to a grocer for wrapping-paper. This resulting volume was edited anonymously by Thomas Thompson (1768-1852), the Deputy Clerk Register of Register House.
