FIRST EDITION, 8vo, pp. 255, [1]. Original green cloth, spine lettered in silver, first-state colour-printed dustjacket with ‘Book Society Choice’ sticker added to front flap. Some foxing, mainly to endpapers and preliminaries, faint scent of woodsmoke. Dustjacket soiled and chipped to edges, binding a little faded where exposed.
Chosen as a Book Society Choice (and with the price altered from 18s to 16s) before publication, but after some dustjackets had already been printed; this first state of the jacket had a Book Society sticker added by the publisher, while for the second state the front flap is updated (along with minor changes in colouration and positioning of the text).
