FIRST EDITION, 8vo, pp. xlvii, [i], 336, 24 (ads). Black and white illustrations within pagination. Original textured maroon cloth, spine lettered in gilt, boards bordered with double blind rules. Binding somewhat rubbed, spine ends bumped. Dundee bookseller’s label and armorial bookplate of Peter Carmichael to front pastedown.

Notes

The first edition of this posthumously published collection of observations by Scottish naturalist Charles St. John (1809-1856), which his wife Anne St. John edited anonymously. This copy was sold by Frederick Shaw of Dundee in the nineteenth century.
