FIRST EDITION, 12mo, pp. [iii]-xxxvi, 392, 4 [ads]. Half-title discarded. Later half purple roan by Birdsall & Son, textured purple cloth boards, spine divided by raised bands gilt, second compartment lettered direct in gilt, other compartments tooled centrally in gilt, top edge gilt. A little soiled, some spotting. Boards just a little marked. Armorial bookplate of Sir James Reid, Bart, to pastedown.

Notes

The first edition of physician and phrenologist Andrew Combe's treatise on mental illness, which recieved an American printing in 1834 and a revised second edition in 1887. This copy belonged to Sir James Reid, the Scottish doctor who served as physician-in-ordinary to Queen Victoria (for which service he was awarded a baronetcy in 1897), Edward VII and George V.
