A substantial and detailed account of the history and science of the perfume industry, the primary work of the botanist and chemist John Charles Sawer (1842-1904). It was a time of major developments particularly in synthetic fragrances and Sawer is recording cutting-edge developments: in addition to artificial musk, coumarin, heliotropin, and vanillin (this last discovered in 1874), there is an account of the violet-smelling ketone ionone in vol. 2, which was only first synthesised in 1893.
