A scarce pamphlet by 'the most learned physician in Scotland' (ODNB) John Thomson (1765-1846) outlining his suggestions for a reorganisation of the surgical department of Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, at the same time as James Gregory was also criticising the administration from the outside. Thomson then became one of six surgeons remaining after the resulting reorganisation. This copy comes from the library (though without mark of ownership) of Sir William Forbes of Pitsligo, Edinburgh banker and philanthropist, who became a permanent manager of the Royal Infirmary in 1785. ESTC records 5 copies, at Aberdeen, Edinburgh, NLS, BL and University of Wisconsin.
