A supplement of sorts to Stewart's masterwork, the Elements of the Philosophy of the Human Mind, which was published in three parts over 35 years - appearing between the first and second parts - the Philosophical Essays comprises responses to the theories of Locke, Berkeley, Hartley, Priestley, and Darwin, followed by a larger section dealing with aesthetic subjects.
