Oblong folio, ff. [94]. 116 mounted photographic prints on 94 leaves plus 2 further pasted to pastedowns. Original half roan, green textured cloth boards, front board lettered direct in gilt. One leaf detached. Somewhat rubbed, a touch of wear to extremities, corner of rear board creased. Some photographs neatly identified in manuscript to mount, typed letter and manuscript reply both dated 1975 loosely inserted.
A substantial collection of original photographic prints, most loosely mounted at corners, but with a few pasted in, primarily the work of Fife-born commercial photographer John Patrick (1831-1923), with his initials printed in at the foot of each image. The images are all undated, but feature three views of the pavilion for the International Exhibition of Industry, Science and Art which took place from May to October 1886, and a view of the sycamore outside Craigmillar Castle popularly known as Queen Mary's Tree, without the railings around it which it acquired that same year.
Despite Edinburgh being on the front board fewer than half the photographs here are scenes of the capital, with the remainder being other Scottish scenes, mainly of the borders and Fife, with a detour to Ayrshire for some Robert Burns-related views of Alloway Kirk. Patrick himself however was based in Edinburgh from 1884 onwards. The few unsigned prints are mostly of a piece with Patrick's work and may well be from his studio, with the outliers being the two larger prints pasted to the pastedowns, one of St Monans Auld Kirk and the other of Leven, both in Fife, the latter of which includes the tollbooth, demolished in the 1870s.
