FIRST EDITION, folio, pp. [4], vi, [2], 697, [5], 701-1056, [16] + frontispiece. Contemporary paste-paper patterned boards backed in calf, red morocco label. Some toning and spotting. Rubbed and worn, joints cracked but sound. Bookplate of James Shepherd to pastedown, small modern ownership inscription to flyleaf, gift inscription dated 1871 (Thomas Bullard from his cousin Ann Bullard) to second flyleaf, ownership inscriptions to title-page of J.S. Bullard (1850), J. Shepherd (1797), and note ‘the late Mr Tho. Tomly no.’, some modern marginal notes in pencil.

The monumental collection of historical documentation relating to Rochester made by the antiquary John Thorpe (1682-1750), and posthumously published by his son John (1715/16-1792).
