Walter and his family had been 'attached' to Lady Jane Douglas, providing assistance of various kinds, while the controversy over the inheritance of the Douglas line had raged, and their case argues that representatives of Archibald Douglas had taken advantage of them and embezzled their livings, ruining them financially. The final page gives an accounting of just the material damages, totalling well over a thousand pounds.
