Description

PUBLISHER’S SAMPLE, 8vo, pp. [viii], 1-16, 401-405, 3 (ads.) + frontispiece and 15 black and white plates. Original publisher’s maroon cloth, gilt portrait of Robespierre stamped to front board, gilt lettering to rear board. Some foxing to leaves, front flyleaf loose. Extremities very slightly bumped, boards a little marked and faded in places.

Notes

This rare publisher's sample provides a brief selection of the beginning and end of the text, as well as all the plates due to be included in the book. As the same publisher's cloth was used to cover the sample, the lettering for the spine of the final book sits on the rear board. Two unrelated plates are loosely inserted, portraits of Marie Antoinette and Madame Tallien, Thérésia Cabarrus, a French noble whom Robespierre denounced.
