FIRST EDITION, FIRST IMPRESSION, large 8vo, pp. xviii, [ii], 432 + engraved frontispiece and 19 plates, one further folding colour plate and 5 maps (1 in colour) in pocket to rear. Near contemporary half blue morocco, blue cloth, spine divided by raised bands with gilt rolls, lettered in gilt, other compartments with central gilt tool, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. A little spotting, top corner of blank flyleaf cut away. Binding slightly rubbed to extremities, a few faint marks to boards.

Notes

The first edition of this landmark mountaineering text detailing the first ascent of the Matterhorn by Edward Whymper (1840-1911). Trained as an engraver, Whymper states in the preface that 'the preparation of the illustrations has occupied a large part of my time during the last six years'.
