Description

FIRST EDITION, 8vo. pp. vi, 281, [1]. Near contemporary prize binding in full green calf, spine divided by raised bands with gilt roll, burgundy morocco label lettered in gilt, other compartments tooled in gilt, boards bordered with double gilt rules, coat of arms blocked in gilt to front board, marbled edges and endpapers. A little spotting and toning. Binding a touch rubbed, label neatly renewed. Prize bookplate to plain flyleaf dated 1860.

Notes

The first edition of the first book published by English naturalist and sportsman Charles St. John (1809-1856), who spent years living in Moray and in other counties in the north of Scotland. This copy was awarded to John Lancelot Shadwell (1844-1900) by Charles Brodrick Scott (1825-1894), headmaster of Westminster School, in 1860.
