Notes

The first edition of Scott's Tales of the Crusaders, the 20th instalment of the Waverley novels, still published without attribution. In the introduction to these four volumes, Scott lays out a fictional meeting of 'literary characters of eminence' who go on to discuss the absurd assumption by the public that all those books 'could be the work of one hand'.
