FIRST ENGLISH EDITION, 8vo, pp. iv, [ii], 407, [1], [iv] + frontispiece and 16 tinted plates. Near contemporary full calf prize binding, spine divided by raised bands with gilt roll, black morocco label lettered direct in gilt, other compartments elaborately tooled in gilt, gilt crest to front board, marbled edges and endpapers. A touch of toning to endpapers. Binding a little marked and rubbed. Ink inscription to front flyleaf dated 1867.

The first English translation of this popular work by German bookseller and writer Hermann Alexander von Berlepsch (1814-1883), rendered into English by author and mountaineer Leslie Stephen (1832-1904), father to Virginia Woolf and Vanessa Bell. This edition was published the same year as the original German, with the same illustrations by Emil Rittmeyer (1820-1904).
