Description

8vo, pp. viii, 339, [1] + 15 plates and 2 folding charts. Original green cloth, spine and front board lettered direct in gilt. A touch of spotting, particularly to title-page. Letter from author dated 1892 and small obituary notice pasted to flyleaf, armorial bookplate of Thomas Colyer Colyer-Fergusson to pastedown, some pencil notes on a folding pedigree.

Notes

This copy was owned by Sir Thomas Colyer Colyer-Fergusson, 3rd Baronet, (1865-1951) who seems to have used it for a little amateur genealogy. He has recorded his descent on the Elliot family folding pedigree chart, and although the letter from the author is addressed only 'Dear Sir', the reference therein to the recipient's 'interest in [the book] as connected to the Elliot family' confirm Colyer-Fergusson as the recipient. The letter also thanks Colyer-Fergusson for a five shilling postal order - perhaps an ex gratia payment for her promised help on information on the Parry family, or perhaps as payment for this book; the Baronet, described in the first paragraph of the National Trust's potted biography of him as a man with 'a reputation for meanness' may had secured a discount on what was then old stock priced at six shillings on the title-page.
