Notes

This companion volume to Douglas's 1764 Peerage of Scotland was announced to be in the press in September 1767, to cover the 'Baronage' - i.e. 'the Scottish sense of those who held land in free barony as tenants-in-chief of the crown' (ODNB). Douglas's death in 1770 delayed the work by another 28 years, and in the event only this single volume was published. Despite the long gestation and aborted continuation 'the work was well known long before publication, and at least parts of it circulated in manuscript during Sir Robert's lifetime. Indeed, his death notice in the Scots Magazine (1770, 24) described Douglas as 'author of the Peerage and Baronage of Scotland'' (ODNB).
