FIRST EDITION, 3 vols., 4to, pp. xxxvi, 352 + frontispiece; [ii], 398, [2] + folding chart; [ii], 528. Original cream cloth, front boards bordered with double gilt rules enclosing a single gilt rule and lettered direct in gilt and red, spines lettered direct in gilt and red, edges red. Some scattered toning, particularly to margins. Bindings somewhat soiled, a little rubbed and bumped to extremities, spines darkened.

Notes

The first appearance of this genealogical work, expanding on the imperfect surviving copies of a supposed list of William the Conqueror's companions at the Battle of Hastings. Each name is accompanied by a lengthy dissertation on the family's history, position and contemporary standing.
