FIRST ENGLISH EDITION, 8vo, pp. xx, 264, [2, ads] + engraved frontispiece, 11 engraved plates, and one chromolithograph plate. Black and white illustrations within pagination. Original textured green cloth by Bone & Son, front board and spine elaborately blocked in gilt, rear board blocked in blind, all edges gilt. A little foxing, endpapers toned. Spine ends bumped, extremities a touch rubbed. Later bookplate of Mark Sprot, Riddell.

A sharp copy of this substantial history of perfumes and beauty practices, the major publication of Eugene Rimmel (c.1820-1887), a French-English perfumer and cosmetics businessman and inventor of the first mass-produced non-toxic mascara. Scarce in this condition.
