SKU: 4315 Category: Tags: ,

2 vols., 4to, pp. [ii], cxxvii, [i], 92; [ii], 93-209, [1], xci, [4, see below], xcii-ci, [15] + 2 engraved title-pages and 93 plates containing 95 images. Contemporary straight-grained black morocco, boards bordered with a combination of blind and gilt rolls, spine divided by raised bands, compartments elaborately tooled in gilt, all edges gilt. Some foxing and toning to plates, with a little offsetting. Extremities a little rubbed, with some wear to spine ends. Engraved armorial bookplate of Sir James Buller to front pastedowns.

A mixed issue of the first printings of The Border Antiquities, which was noted by Scott himself to be a 'foolishly conducted publication' that 'must be given up'. The bibliography of these volumes is complex: this example is at least partly from the first edition, with watermarks of 1809 and 1815 intermixed with 1821 and 1822. Towards the end of the appendix, an extra bifolium has been bound in, containing a duplicate of the final leaf of the appendix and a variant half-title. Listings claiming 96 total plates are based on the plate list, which has 96 entries, including four smaller illustrations that appear in pairs across two plates. There is also one plate unaccounted for in the list, but usually found.
