Contemporary half calf, marbled boards, spines divided by triple gilt rules, lettered and tooled in gilt, edges sprinkled red. A hint of spotting. Bindings rubbed, joints of first volume cracking but sound, gilt rubbed away from spines. Armorial bookplates of K. Somerville to front pastedowns.

Notes

The first edition of prolific Scottish writer George Robert Gleig's (1796-1888) third work of fiction, published while he served as chaplain at Chelsea Hospital. It was his first novel published as such under his own name, following an anonymous story and his best known work, a collection of articles based on his experiences in the Peninsular War, along with various non-fiction books.
