A scarce hybrid novel and cookbook aimed at the juvenile market. It follows a thirteen-year-old girl's education in the mysteries of the kitchen by her grandmother's cook. Its didactic nature is driven home by the index of recipes and techniques to rear, and by the author's foreword which urges prospective chefs to copy the recipes into a notebook before attempting them as 'recipe-books have a way of getting messed when you prop them up on the kitchen-table while you are cooking, and I think you would be sorry if "The Cook-House Door" became spotted with gravy or stuck together with treacle.'
